2023 Moffitt Adventure Ride
In 2014 Dr. Tom Moffitt, OTET Board President, invited a group of friends to attempt to ride the Ohio to Erie Trail. At the time there was no complete map of the trail and we were actually scouting how to connect the various trails and traverse the larger cities. In 2015 a slightly larger group led by Dr. Moffitt rode the trail again proving that there was a continuous, viable route.
The goals that Dr. Tom Moffitt was pursuing in 2016 when the OTET organization began offering a fully supported Trail Ride was to get the word out about the existence of the Ohio to Erie Trail and for riders to have a way to experience the Trail through an organized, weeklong ride. In the past six years the OTET has become one of the premier cross-state bike trails and there are a myriad of tour companies that offer supported rides on the Trail. At this point in time the OTET organization believes it has accomplished Dr. Moffitt’s goals. Since the organization is not structured as a sustainable touring business we have made the difficult decision to stop offering the fully supported Moffitt Memorial Ride.
In a nod to the early Adventure Rides organized by Dr. Moffitt, a group of OTET Board members and friends are planning to ride the OTET during 9-15 September 2023. This will be a non-commercial, unsupported ride. There are no fees and every rider is responsible for their own logistics planning. We will follow the itinerary of Covington, Xenia, Columbus, Mount Vernon, Millersburg, Massillon, Akron, and Cleveland. The core group includes: Mike Groeber, Tom Alexander, Sandy Sanders, Ron Overly, and Bob Niedenthal. Anyone who wants to join us on this 2023 Moffitt Adventure Ride is welcome to ride along; you just need to show up in Covington on Saturday morning 9 September.
